We are pleased to announce that the Philippine Population Association will hold its 2010 Annual Scientific Conference on 4-5 February 2010. Submission of abstracts is now open. Below is the list of sessions for your reference.

We encourage submission of abstracts of no more than 300 words for evaluation by the Scientific Conference Committee for possible oral or poster presentation. The papers should focus on the Philippines. Inter-country comparisons will be considered as long as the Philippines is one of the countries. Papers submitted should not have been published or presented locally. We also encourage proposals for panels with a maximum of three papers per panel.

Non-PPA members are also invited to submit abstracts and panel proposals.

Two other sessions, one In Memory of Dr. Wilhelm Flieger,SVD and another on Historical Demography in the Philippines will also be held. Paper presenters in these two sessions are by invitation only.

In Memory of Dr. Wilhelm Flieger, SVD (1931-1999)
The session will commemorate the works of Dr. Wilhelm Flieger, SVD, in observance of his 10th death anniversary (December 1999). Fr. Flieger, a demographer trained at the University of Chicago and one of the pioneering demographers in the Philippines, was a founding member and past president of the Philippine Population Association. This session will include: (1) a brief history of his works, including the establishment of the University of San Carlos Office of Population Studies Foundation, Inc. (OPS) in Cebu as the university’s response to the government’s call for more academic involvement in national development through population and related research; (2) descriptions, highlights of findings, and substantive and methodological contributions of the longitudinal studies conducted by OPS under the leadership of Fr. Flieger –– the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey and the Early Childhood Development Project Evaluation Study; and, (3) the development and utilization of life table estimates for the Philippines, its regions and provinces.

Historical Demography in the Philippines
This session will present papers on historical demography in the Philippines with emphasis on mortality and morbidity in the 19th century.

Accepted papers/posters will be notified by 13 November 2009. Full papers of accepted papers should be submitted by 18 December 2009 for inclusion in the book of abstracts.

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP/ORIENTATION
A one-day pre-conference workshop on Technical Writing and Presentation of Research Results and a half-day orientation on different evaluation methodologies will also be conducted on 3 February 2009.
