With the theme "Philippine Population: Past, Present and Prospects", the 2012 Population Association (PPA) Annual Scientific Conference will be held at Taal Vista Hotel Tagaytay on 2 - 3 February 2012. Guest speaker Dr. John Casterline, Professor of Sociology and Director of Initiative in Population Research at the Ohio State University will speak and present on "Contemporary Fertility Decline: Myths and Realities". The latest issues of the Philippine Population Review will also be launched in the conference.

Concurrent sessions will feature oral and poster presentations on the following topics:

Sexuality and Reproductive Health Issues
Youth and Aging Issues
Fertility and Poverty: Perspectives from the PCPD Fellows

This year's scientific conference will also include a session for The State of the Art Research in Internal Migration in collaboration with the Philippine Migration Research Network. Registration fee for the two-day conference is PhP3,000 for members, Php4,000 for non-members, PhP1,800 for student-members, and PhP2,400 for student non-members.

A pre-conference lecture will be held on 31 January 2012 in collaboration with the University of the Philippines Population Institute and Demographic Research and Development Foundation (UPPI-DRDF). Lecture and presentation on Statistical Analysis of Event Histories: Principles and Procedures will be given by Dr. John Casterline. The venue and other details of the pre-conference lecture is indicated in the invitation below.

2011 PPA Conference in Cagayan de Oro City

The 2011 Philippine Population Association (PPA) Annual Scientific Conference will be held at Dynasty Court Hotel in Cagayan de Oro City on 3 - 4 February 2011 with the theme: “Towards a Critical and Responsive Engagement to Population Challenges.” Archbishop Antonio J. Ledesma, S.J., the guest speaker, will speak on “Responsible Parenthood and All-Natural Family Planning Program”. Former congressman Nereus O. Acosta will speak about the conference theme while Atty. Elizabeth Pangalangan will discuss the "Constitutional Issues in Reproductive Health: Focus on Adolescents" . This year’s conference also features several parallel oral and poster sessions on topics such as women and children in conflict areas, population aging, and historical demography.

Philippine Population Review Call for Papers

The Philippine Population Review is a peer-reviewed journal of the Philippine Population Association. It is featured in Philippine Journals Online (http://www.philjol.info) and in Ulrich’s Periodicals Directory (http://www.ulrichsweb.com).

The Review seeks to strengthen the evidence-based discourse of population issues confronting the national, international and global communities. It provides a forum for the conceptual, methodological and empirical quantitative and qualitative analyses of the vital events of human population—fertility, mortality, morbidity and migration—including their movements, interrelationships, complexities, consequences and impact. Its scientific information base is expected to help improve population and population-related policies, programs, teaching and research, towards enhancing the quality of life and well-being of all.

Manuscripts addressing any of the foregoing topics or themes may be considered for the Review’s next two issues. Please follow these instructions:

1. Authors should submit original manuscripts only. Whether a full length research article (5,000-6,000 words), a research note (2,000-3,000 words), or a book review (1,000-2,000 words), submitted manuscripts must not have been published nor being considered for publication elsewhere.

2. Submitted articles must bear the following information. The first page should contain the title of the manuscript, the names of the authors and their institutional affiliations and complete contact addresses. The subsequent pages should discuss the contents of the articles. For research articles, the contents should have the following parts:

a) abstract (with five keywords maximum),

b) introduction

c) methods

d) discussion

e) conclusion and

f) references.

Tables and figures should be embedded within the text, but these must be kept to a maximum of five. References should be prepared according to the standards set by the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association 5^th edition. Manuscripts must be double-spaced.

3. Manuscripts must be submitted via email to ppaphils@gmail.com. All submissions will be acknowledged. The review process takes up to three months. Once a manuscript is received, the editor reviews it for relevance, substance, rigor and organization. If deemed suitable, it is forwarded for peer review. Review results are immediately communicated to the authors. If the review outcome is “revise and resubmit,” the author/s is/are required to resubmit the manuscript one month upon receipt of the reviewer’s comments and suggested revisions.

In Memory of Dr. Wilhelm Flieger, SVD (1931-1999)
The session will commemorate the works of Dr. Wilhelm Flieger, SVD, in observance of his 10th death anniversary (December 1999). Fr. Flieger, a demographer trained at the University of Chicago and one of the pioneering demographers in the Philippines, was a founding member and past president of the Philippine Population Association. This session will include: (1) a brief history of his works, including the establishment of the University of San Carlos Office of Population Studies Foundation, Inc. (OPS) in Cebu as the university’s response to the government’s call for more academic involvement in national development through population and related research; (2) descriptions, highlights of findings, and substantive and methodological contributions of the longitudinal studies conducted by OPS under the leadership of Fr. Flieger –– the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey and the Early Childhood Development Project Evaluation Study; and, (3) the development and utilization of life table estimates for the Philippines, its regions and provinces.

Historical Demography in the Philippines
This session will present papers on historical demography in the Philippines with emphasis on mortality and morbidity in the 19th century.

PPA 2009 Annual Scientific Conference

The Philippine Population Association, the organization of demographers and population specialists in the country, is holding its Annual Scientific Conference with the theme "Population Movements: Global-Local Intersections" on 6 February 2009 at Hotel Supreme, Baguio City.

This year's keynote speaker is Dr. Peter Xenos, Adjunct Professor at the University of Hawaii. Two concurrent sessions on "International Labor Migration" and "Indigenous Peoples and Local Movements" will be held in the afternoon. Poster presentations will also be held.

Two pre-conference training/workshops are scheduled in the afternoon of 5 February 2009: (1) Demographic Measures with Computer Application and (2) Technical Writing 101. We encourage early registration. Please refer to the attached for the program, arrangements and registration fees for the conference and training/workshops.

In addition, the Philippine Population Review, Volume 7 will be launched during the conference.

Who are we?
Professional associations usually start out with a handful of enthusiasts bonded by common professional interests and goals. The PPA was established in 1987, by a group of dynamic demographers. These individuals represented governmental as well as private centers from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao engaged in population and population-related studies.

PPA is a non-stock, non-profit, non-partisan, and non-sectarian association.

What do we want to be?
A dynamic, quality-driven organization of professionals who are engaged in population and population-related activities, which promotes a scientific base for addressing population and population-related issues through research and dissemination, training and extension, and keeps population issues at the forefront of public consciousness.

What shall we do to get there?
To advance the application of scientific rigor to the study and debate of population trends, patterns, processes, issues and programs through the following means:

Promotion of basic and applied population research;
Research and capability upgrading of members;
Provision of regular for a for addressing population and population-related issues;
Publication of scientific journal on population and population-related research and other activities; and
Forging strategic partnerships and networks.

Above are two photographs from the workshop on Strategic Leadership for Population, Development and Reproductive Health Champions where the PPA Visayas Chapter was launched last May 20, 2006 at the MBA Executive Room of the University of San Carlos, Cebu City. Not all participants in the workshop are members of PPA, but all were given invitations or application forms for PPA membership. Many pledged to join, following consultation with or approval from their respective schools and organizations.

The following are the newly elected PPA Visayas Chapter Officers:

Treasurer: Josephine Avila

Three of the officers (Dr. Gultiano, Alice Lim, Josephine Avila) are old members of PPA. Alice joined the PPA during the last General Assembly meeting in Manila. She is involved in NGO work and is sometimes an affiliate of the Office of the Population Studies (OPS) . The secretary, Regina Salvador, is a new member from POPCOM Region 7 (she's the lady in red-striped blouse
and polka-dot skirt). The officers will be holding a meeting next week to prepare a plan of activities for the chapter.

Guidelines for authors

The Philippine Population Review accepts articles related to population, reproductive health, and other developmental issues. Articles could be in any of the following formats:
1. Research articles, which are empirical analyses of research studies, program evaluations as well as academic exercises on population, reproductive health, and development issues;
2. Research notes, which explore methodological and theoretical issues on population, reproductive health, and development research;
3. Commentaries, which are analyses on specific issue, policy or program related to population, reproductive health, and development; and
4. Reviews of researches, books and bibliographic essays on population, reproductive health, and development matters.

Manuscript preparation and submission
For prospective authors, please submit an electronic file in MS Word format, using Times Roman font, 12 points.

1. Attach a separate sheet indicating the manuscript’s title and the name(s) of the author(s), their institutional affiliations, and complete contact addresses.
2. Articles should be double spaced and with all pages numbered.
3. Place all tables and charts on separate sheets at the end of the text. All charts should be provided with data points for easy replication.

The Philippine Population Association holds the copyright on all materials published in the PPR. Re-publication rights to authors however can be granted on request.
